Cottage Life

78 days ago · Sarah Lazarovic

Some lazy doodles from our cottage sojourn. Between the bug bites and my need to be either sleeping or swimming all the time, i barely had the energy to lazily lift pen to paper.

Unrelated: thumbing through yesterday's Times book review, I thought that Howard Hampton, rock critic, looked remarkably similar to Harold Hampton, NDP leader. What a goof! Not that it isn't easy to see how such a mistake would come to pass in these days of Googled images. It's a good cautionary tale for illustrators who have to use the web to suss out likenesses of their subjects.

Wood Hands

Here's a quick painterly sketch of The Mister that I did last week. Bought a bunch of boards, having never painted on wood before. Discovered I quite like it.

Shut Up, I'm Drinking

160 days ago · Sarah Lazarovic

This book launch
was too full, so I sat at the Gladstone bar sketching the Gladstone bar.

Something alumni-esque was going down in Ithaca, so we had to stay at a hotel overlooking a dumpster on the outskirts of town. The hotel itself was fine.

Sketches, Portraits, The MOMMA!

162 days ago · Sarah Lazarovic

House sketch, just for fun. Plus some new portraits up in the portraits section. I think I've just eclipsed 100.
Also, here are some neat things:
this post by Kayce.
• loving this painter named Mamma!
• And speaking of Mammas, partner-in-crime Bob and I are launching a new web site and gallery, TheMomma.ca. Please check it out and submit too!

Happy Earth Day!

169 days ago · Sarah Lazarovic

Who is this weird monster? He's the tankless hot water heater we installed in our basement a few weeks ago. He's got more limbs than a centipede. Next week he'll be joined by some equally tubular new friends - solar panels.

Search Me

177 days ago · Sarah Lazarovic

Certainly it's a cliché to write posts about all the weird searches that have brought people to your site, but I love love love the fact that SarahL.com is the first thing someone arrives at when they Google 'hot gallerina.' I'm thinking whoever performed that highbrow/lowbrow search was perhaps trying to find this New York Times article of a few days earlier.

We finally tried Buddha Dog, Roncesvalles' miniature gourmet hot dog emporium. Review: mixed. Later in the day, I decided to use all leftover inks on post-it pieces.

Resort Where?

196 days ago · Sarah Lazarovic

Doing some sketches for a series of brochures for some Florida resorts. Definitely vicarious living as I sketched boats and beach houses while a late March snow fell here. Spring, where are you?

• In other news, are these awesome or awful?

Late Lunch Sketch Bunch

232 days ago · Sarah Lazarovic

Either my watch is all wrong or my friends are a late-arriving lot. No matter, it's afforded me a few secs to sketch before every lunch or dinner date of late.
Here's Foxley:

And here's The Patrician Grill:

Monday Link List

240 days ago · Sarah Lazarovic

• Ben was late, so I dashed off a quick sketch at Aroma. I recommend the Mediterranean sandwich. Eggplant and hard-boiled egg, who knew?
• CityNews came to visit and wrote about the portrait project! So did The Town Crier, but I can't find it online.
• I wrote about my year of not shopping in the Ottawa Citizen, so if you see a copy of Sunday's edition lazing about, read it and then mail it to me!
My love for Patricia Marx only grows! Finally got her novel (now in paperback!), Him Her Him Again Then the End of Him or Something Like That involving Gratuitous Pronouns. So good, worth it just for the appendix. And we all know how useful an appendix is, so this is saying a lot.

Finally getting started on my first Chalmers short film experiment. This one is a series of rapid fire drawings that tell a loose story.

Latest AW in the gallery, I've been remiss in posting them.

'Frustrated and mimosa'd, they spent the afternoon labouring over a beautiful but trying puzzle.'

Sketching and Kvetching

I hate ironing so much that even watching other people iron gets me steamed.
We saw Persepolis, which I recommend with reservations. If you've already read all the graphic novels it feels a bit repetitive. Still, it's beautiful, smart, and illuminating.

Post-Beach Malaise

286 days ago · Sarah Lazarovic

It's nice to be home, but I already miss the sun. So I'll just think of the stuff I don't miss (Botoxed mums, Juicy Couture sweatsuits, manky holiday shoppers, beepers that signal you when your table is ready) and be glad to be back home in wintry Toronto. Here are some hasty sketches done while sitting on Deerfield Beach. It was hard to concentrate because we were taking turns reading aloud from Alex Ross' The Rest is Noise, which makes me want more Mahler in my life.
Happy New Year!

Life and White Beer

Finally got to life drawing after months (years?) of not being able to go. Boy am I rusty. I love that you can buy a half pint at the Melody Bar and sip it while you sketch.

News

Lines of the Times

Very much enjoying my illustrating gig for The National. Have to convey rather heady ideas in tiny black and white spots. This one was about the demise of Lehman Bros.

We Shot a Short

Our NSI Drama Prize Short is shot. Our actors were fantastic, our crew equally so. Now begins the post production process. They loved owls in the 70s, didn't they?

My Film and TIFF's Films

Sorry for the hiatus. We've been shooting our feature all month. Here's a still from the top floor of Aunties & Uncles, where we shot a brunch scene.

Other Projects

Portrait Project

I'll be doing one portrait a day until I can't do one portrait a day anymore. Not allowed to spend more than an hour on each one.

Long Live Irony

This is my catch-all site - art projects, journalism, weird experiments, all founded in the general belief that irony is not dead, regardless of what Graydon Carter says.

Dress and Suit

A joint blog where me and the Mr. post our thoughts on fashion and design, and I chronicle my year of not shopping. (I've cheated once.)

The Portrait Gallery

The government has been all kinds of annoying when it comes to creating a respectable National Portrait Gallery of Canada. So we built one in our garage this summer!
